Why check the BBB and other sources for background on roofing companies? We’re taking a look!

As you search Google and the BBB for reviews of roofing companies, it’s a good idea to take a step back and understand why these resources matter in the first place. After all, it’s easy to take a look at the overall ratings of a few different companies and just pick the highest-rated one. But is that all reviews are for?

Here at Dolan Restoration, we understand that online reviews matter a great deal when selecting a contractor of any sort. Not only that, but they offer a lot of value outside of the overall score or grade a company receives! We’re focusing today’s post on why online reviews matter so you will be better informed the next time you sift through roofing companies, or other contractors, on BBB and Google Reviews. Let’s get started!

Reviews help generate a shortlist of roofing companies

Let’s start with the main reason many people use reviews in the first place: higher scores typically do indicate better quality. Rather than just picking the top score, however, it’s a good idea to use Google Reviews and grades from the BBB to generate a shortlist of the highest-quality roofing companies in your area. For Google Reviews, you’ll usually want roofing companies with at least a 4.0/5.0 and a fair number of ratings. While a 5.0 score is nice, it doesn’t mean much if a company only has a handful of reviews!

When it comes to the BBB, scores are given in the form of a letter grade ranging from A+ to F, just like in school. Their rating system is fairly complex, but according to the BBB, the ratings “represent BBB’s degree of confidence that the business is operating in a trustworthy manner and will make a good faith effort to resolve any customer concerns.” You can read more about their rating system on their website. Typically, you should look for BBB rating in the “A” range in order for roofing companies to make your shortlist.

Reviews reveal a company’s track record

With the overall rating out of the way, it’s time to cover some other ways that reviews can be useful. One of the most important things reviews tell you is more about the history of every roofing company you’re considering hiring. Knowing more about their track record gives you a better idea of where they’ve been and the quality of work they’re doing right now

For example, maybe a roofing company had several negative reviews in the past, but has since worked to improve their performance. These past negative reviews will drag down their overall rating, but checking through recent reviews should show the improvements they’ve made. Of course, this works in the reverse, too! A highly reviewed company may have declined in quality recently, and you’ll be able to see this in recent reviews.

Reading reviews tells you how a roofing company addresses concerns

No matter what the industry, every business will make mistakes and have dissatisfied customers at some point or another. These mistakes will lead to negative reviews—which is a great chance for you, as a potential customer, to learn how the company addresses concerns!

When faced with a negative review, how does the company respond? Do they deny the problem, or even blame the customer? Do they admit their mistake, explain how it happened, and attempt to make things up to the customer somehow? Or do they not respond at all? In general, the best roofing companies will respond directly to negative reviews, admit fault, and do their best not to repeat the same mistake.

This is where the BBB is especially helpful. Since the BBB focuses on ethics and resolution of complaints, the BBB is a great resource for finding out how roofing companies address (or don’t address) negative customer experiences.
