Did your roof weather the winter? Are your gutters ready for rain?
We’ve all heard of April showers, and of course the summer months that come after bring storm season here in Texas. That means, with spring just around the corner, now is a good time to make sure your roof and gutters are up to the task of keeping your family safe and dry.
Keeping up with your roof’s maintenance makes good financial sense, too. The more you do to maintain the health of your roof, the less likely it is that you’ll be facing major repairs down the line!
Here at Dolan Roofing & Construction, we can’t stress enough the importance of making sure your roof is in peak condition heading into the rainier and stormier months of spring. So today, we’re going over some of the best things you can do to prepare your roof and gutters for the months ahead. Let’s get started!
Clean your gutters and remove debris from your roof
Fall and winter are prime seasons for debris to accumulate on your roof and especially in your gutters. Whether it’s fallen leaves, branches, or dirt and mud, any debris or foreign objects can interfere with the functioning of your home’s drainage system.
That means one of the first steps you should take to prepare for spring is to fully clean your gutters. This is a key roof maintenance task, and should generally be done in both the fall (heading into the winter) and in the early months of spring (heading into the rainier months). Removing debris will prevent any clogs or stoppages, which may otherwise lead to rainwater flowing where you don’t want it to go!
Clear out any animal nests
Leaves, sticks, and other debris aren’t the only things you’re liable to find in your gutters and the crevices of your roof. Many kinds of critters are liable to seek shelter from the cooler weather during the winter months, and spring, of course, is the prime nesting season for a host of animals.
The longer animals are allowed to take up residence in your residence, the more likely they are to chew, scratch, burrow, and dig, causing all kinds of damage to your roof and other parts of your home. So as you set about cleaning your roof and gutters, look (and listen!) for animals that may be nesting in the nooks and crannies of your roof.
Take care, though: if you find a nest of animals full of young, it’s best to contact animal control or a similar organization. Wild animals can become aggressive to protect their homes, and the task of removing them is best left to a professional.
Schedule a roof inspection
As you look over your roof and the rest of your home’s exterior, it’s a good idea to look for obvious signs of damage that will need to be repaired. But while there’s plenty of damage you can spot yourself, there’s plenty more that only a professional roofer will be able to diagnose.
Now is the ideal time to schedule a roof inspection for your home or commercial property. As the rainy and stormy months approach, it’s very important that your roof is in the best health possible. A roofing professional will be able to identify any issues with your roof (especially leaks) before they turn into more expensive problems.
Fix any damage promptly
Of course, while it’s nice to know whether your roof is damaged, it’s important to take steps to fix the damage as soon as you hear about it. When left unchecked, damage to your roof can quickly worsen, leading to expensive repairs or even a roof replacement.
Minor patches and shingle replacements are good candidates for DIY home improvement projects, but it’s generally best to contact a professional for a roof repair. Roof repairs can typically be completed within a day, and when you call on an expert roofer you can be confident that the job was done correctly!
